Table-Top-Role-Playing-Games
Therapy Group

  • Combining the imaginative and immersive world of TTRPGs with therapeutic work is a great way to foster growth in social skills, emotional expression, and self-confidence. By engaging in role-playing, participants can explore different aspects of themselves in a safe and creative space while building skills that extend beyond the gaming table.

Some concerns TTRPG’s can be helpful for:

    • Social Anxiety: Practicing communication and interaction through characters can ease real-world social discomfort.

    • Emotional Expression: Playing a range of characters helps participants connect with and express complex emotions.

    • Self-Confidence: Stepping into a character's shoes allows for the safe exploration of confidence and assertiveness.

    • Problem-Solving: TTRPGs often require creative thinking and teamwork, skills that translate well into real-life challenges.

    No prior TTRPG experience necessary!

    Tuesdays 6-8pm starting 1/22/25.

In-person at our 425 Industrial Avenue location in Morgantown, WV.

Email Nathan at nathan@unboundcounseling.org with any questions or to express interest in joining the group!

  • During the free intake, you select one or two personality traits from a provided list (or come up with your own) as a basis for your character. These should be growth edges, or things you would like to see more of in your life. The goal of the group is to strengthen these positive parts of you.

There will also be a few screening questions.

The group (4-6 participants) will meet in person and use paper character sheets (will be provided). In the first meeting, we will flesh out your characters together, so don’t do too much backstory planning! We will go over the rules of the game system and agree on ground rules for how we want to play as a group.

Then, we enter the game, and you play your character with your chosen traits. You decide how you want to use these traits and encourage others to do the same. We’ll find story arcs together as we play. Towards the end of the session, we’ll shift into processing the game so far. We’ll talk about what worked well and what didn’t, as well as discuss future direction for the story and characters.

While the most well-known TTRPG system is Dungeons and Dragons, we will use a different system called Dungeon World. It has fewer rules and more emphasis on dynamics between characters. I feel it offers more character choices (opportunities to practice your chosen traits) and collaboration in storytelling (opportunities to help create story elements that are personal to you).

All of these rules will be covered in the first session, so don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with the system or with TTRPG’s in general.
